Romeo And Juliet
Posted
by: 11ºI
Romeo and Juliet belonged to two feuding families, the Capulets and the Montagues. Both families felt a profound hatred for one another, therefore they were always in conflict. One day, Paris asked Lord Capulet, Juliet’s father, permission to marry her. The latter felt so happy that he decided to organize a masquerade. Romeo, who had never seen Juliet before, went to the ball hoping to meet Roseline, who he was in love with.At the ball, Romeo and Juliet met and exchanged just a few words; however, this was enough for them to fall madly in love with each other. So later at night, at the end of the ball, both declared their mutual love and prudently decided to keep it a secret.Friar Lawrence complied with the couple’s desire to get married, thinking their marriage would unite both families. However, Tybalt, Juliet’s cousin, challenged Romeo for a duel, but Romeo refused to fight. Surprisingly, Romeo’s friend, Mercutio, accepted the challenge in his place and got killed in it instead of Romeo. Revolted and angry, Romeo decided to revenge his friend’s death by killing Tybalt. Because of this, the Prince of Verona punished Romeo by expelling him from Verona forever. Meanwhile, Juliet received the news of this, but kept faithful to her husband and their deep love. She ordered her maid to deliver a message to Romeo, asking him to meet with her that very night. Next morning, after Romeo had left Verona, Juliet’s parents decided she should marry Paris. She totally opposed her parents’ orders despite their threat of disinheriting her. Completely desperate, Juliet asked Friar Lawrence to help her to pretend to get married just to fool them. Friar Lawrence then gave Juliet an elixir to drink that would make everybody think she was dead.Meanwhile, the Friar wrote a letter to Romeo, asking him to return to Verona in an attempt to get the couple to stay together.Unfortunately, the plan turned out a horrible tragedy. The letter to Romeo went astray and when he heard about his beloved wife’s death, he went mad and bought a bottle of poison to kill himself.*The young man returned to Verona and headed straight to the chapel. Once there, he found Paris mourning over his beloved one’s body. Furious and heart-broken, Romeo killed Paris at once.Believing his beloved wife to be really dead, he drank the poison and fell dead by her side. When Juliet woke up from the effect of the elixir, she realised that a terrible misunderstanding had led Romeo to his death. Also desperate, broken-hearted and finding no poison at hand, she took a dagger, stabbed herself, and, thus, lay forever by the side of her beloved husband.Later that day, the feuding families and the Prince met at the tomb where the three dead bodies lay. In the wake of so great a tragedy, the mortal enimies reconciled and peace reigned forever in their families.
